Fuerteventura and Gran Canaria will be qualifying races for the Challenge Family World Championship


Playitas Challenge Fuerteventura Triathlon will be the first to give points for the  ‘Thechampionship’ which will debut next year in the Slovak town of Samorin.

Challenge Fuerteventura and Challenge Mogan-Gran Canaria will be qualifying races of the World Championship organized by the renowned brand Challenge Family, which has 44 Triathlon races in more than twenty countries. The ‘Thechampionship’ opens next June 3, 2017 in the Slovak town of Samorín.

Challenge Fuerteventura, entering its sixth edition this Saturday, will be the first event in this renowned franchise to give points for the ‘Thechampionship’ Challenge Triathlon World Championship. Challenge Mogán-Gran Canaria, which premieres on September 17th, is also a qualifier to add points for athletes to race the ‘Thechampionship’ in Samorín.

The presence of Fuerteventura and Mogan in this Challenge Family World Championship is an important asset to increase the presence of European triathletes in the Canary Islands, who increasingly come to the islands to train and participate in its international sport.

Challenge Family and x – bionic® today announced a new global half distance Triathlon, a Championship event for professional and age group triathletes.

Known as ‘Thechampionship’, the event will take place in the amazing x – bionic® sphere in Samorín, Slovakia, June 3, 2017. Jan Masek, General Manager of x -bionic® sphere, has promised an unforgettable experience to athletes.

For professional athletes, THECHAMPIONSHIP 2017 will carry a minimum €150,000 professional prize purse. A unique professional qualifying system will firstly see professional athletes able to qualify for THECHAMPIONSHIP 2017 via CHALLENGE FAMILY events worldwide.

In addition, professional athletes who finish in the top five at the Rio 2016 Olympic Games, or a top three finish in the 2016 World Triathlon Series end of season rankings, 2016 ITU Long Distance Championship, 2016 Ironman World Championship or 2016 Ironman 70.3 World Championship will also receive an invite to THECHAMPIONSHIP 2017.

Challenge Samorin 2016 will carry double the qualifying slots for THECHAMPIONSHIP 2017. Challenge Fuerteventura, to be held this Saturday will host Ironman World Champion, Frederik Van Lierde. 2013 Winner of the most prestigious event of this sport among other world and Olympic stars of triathlon.

Van Lierde face elite athletes including, Andi Böcherer, Timo Bracht, Will Clarke, Markus Fachbach and Jonathan Ciavattella, winner of the last edition in Fuerteventura. The Italian triathlete will be at the start of the race on April 23 looking to achieve the double and reach the former record of European champion, Rasmus Henning, winner of this Challenge event in 2011 and 2012. In the 2015 race, the Italian won only by 18 seconds, with a time of 04:02:52.

Ciavattella will not have an easy race against the 2013 Ironman World Champion, Belgian athlete and the array of top level rivals registered in the race, which also includes rising young stars like Brennan Townshend, Patrik Nilsson and Albert Moreno.

In the Female Professional line up, Emma Pooley, World Champion in cycling time trial, 2 x world champion in Duathlon and silver medalist in the Beijing Olympics, has been preparing since the end of 2015 to return to Olympic cycling in Rio de Janeiro. The British star has chosen the event based at Playitas to acclimatize to the Brazilian destination. Her main opponent is the best German long-distance triathlete, Anja Beranek.
